Description
Colombian red-footed tortoises are a stunning South American species known for their vibrant coloring and personable nature. These medium-sized tortoises feature bright red and orange scales on their legs and head, with dark shells accented by yellow or orange markings.
Size: Typically reaches 11 to 14 inches in length, with males often larger than females.
Temperament: Known for being one of the most interactive tortoise species. They recognize their keepers and often approach for food.
Habitat Requirements:
- Hatchlings need a 2ft x 3ft enclosure minimum with a secure top
- Adults require much larger spaces (6ft x 8ft or outdoor pens in warm climates)
- High humidity (70-80%) is essential
- Temperature range: 75-85°F with basking spot at 90-95°F
Diet:
- Staple: Dark leafy greens (collard greens, dandelion, kale, turnip greens)
- Fruits: Occasional treats (papaya, mango, berries)
- Protein: More than other tortoises – offer insects, mushrooms, or mazuri tortoise diet
- Variation is crucial for optimal health
Water: Hatchlings should be soaked in shallow water twice weekly for 15-30 minutes. Adults benefit from a large water dish for soaking.
